Too bad I can't return it

Of course it offers your Mini a little more protection when you hit it against rocks or throw it off a cliff. For typical use, the Mini looks pretty solid on its own. At first I added this and a screen protector, but removed the Tusita case soon after because it felt overdone. Adding that rubber sleeve is just for excess heat and maybe blocking signals from leaking out of the device?
