The switch on the fan that was in the house when it was bought (over 25 years ago) was broken and as the fan was still in good condition the easiest thing to do was to replace the switch. At first they thought I could just run to Lowes for a switch but a quick web search showed they wanted the same amount for a switch as I paid for all three. However, please note that these switches are supplied exactly as shown, ie without cables. They have push-in connectors, so you must first strip the ends of the wires from the fan (there's a guide right on the switches), twist the ends of the wires so they're stiff enough, and then insert them into the terminals on the switch housing. Apart from connecting the two speed cables in reverse order (low speed - high, high - low speed) everything went smoothly and the fan worked fine again. I also now have two spares in case another switch breaks.
