Until I found it, there wasn't really a "good way" to connect to the cable. There's a thing I call a guillotine, a device that crimps wire with a blade. I've always felt that these things probably cut about half the wires in a strand. Or you can strip the insulation, being careful not to cut the wires, and then solder the connecting wires together. But with a large bundle of wire to examine to trace the signal, and with a 22 gauge, there really wasn't a good answer. So far. While these things don't come cheap, they work GREAT! While they are primarily intended to be permanently connected to a cable, they are very good for a temporary connection to test a signal. When removed, they leave only a very small pinhole. I bought a sample kit and then started packing. I wouldn't want to be without them in my dishes anymore.
