I used it on two laps where my GPS watch was in place. This range finder worked great, the distances matched the GPS but were slightly more accurate than the front, center and back GPS readings. Yes, the background will be recorded if it is not centered. With this or any other rangefinder, I always pick a close object in the foreground or background to make sure I know I'm hitting the spot when I'm moving towards it (for example, in most cases it's the front of the green ). I've used several brand names that cost at least twice as much and yes they have pin bounce technology with reflectors or multiple hits to get an average distance. Found this range finder to be just as accurate and didn't feel the extra features were worth the price always made sure I got the right range.
