I used to have an older Swix ski sharpener , which did a fairly effective job of keeping sharp edges on my skis, but after about ten years I stopped skiing and lost this tool. So I came to Revain looking for a replacement and unfortunately settled on this DMT tool. I've used it a few times with minimal ski edge enhancement and now the tool is mostly worn out. I do not recommend this. ADVANTAGES: You can easily change the bevel angle from 1 degree to about 5 degrees by turning the dial on the bottom. - It's small enough to easily carry in a pocket (any pocket, it's actually about 1.5" x 1.5" x 1") - Diamond coated sharpening steels can be substituted. - I believe them are made in the USA which is coming up a rarity for tools in general let alone small tools that are partly plastic CONS: - Very little, a pair of 140cm that had fairly blunt edges I would say , I would rate them a 5/10 on the hotness scale where 1 is almost round and 10 is ready for racing on ice and could hurt your finger if you run over the edge too casually for 10 minutes for each pair with DMT Burr Doctor If I were being generous I'd say I got it a maybe 6/10, but to be honest it might just be my imagination that I wish my efforts were having an effect - a positive effect. This device will NOT change a dull ski through one n sharp, and not even a significant give an extra edge between runs when the skis are gliding across the ice. The Swix sharpener I used didn't bring the edges to a fully sharpened, fully tuned level that required a file to initially sharpen the edges, but it did the job much better than this DMT unit. I have a pair of quality K2s in my basement that I bought in 1993, have used them probably 70 times without getting a professional tune, haven't used them since 1997 and my old Swix comes out on top. The sharper is still way sharper than what I could get on my new skis with the DMT Burr Doctor. It is too small for comfortable use. About the size of a golf ball with flat ends, the tool feels too tight in the hand, doesn't provide a sufficiently wide and stable platform when pulled down the edge of the ski, and never gave out. I'm sure it can keep the blade at the right angle (especially when working with a side blade rather than a wider base) and also protect my hand from the blade if I go off course too quickly. too good and wears out quickly. I've used this tool twice on two skis and the diamond grit on the steel appears to have mostly worn away - it's mostly smooth both visually and to the touch when I run my fingernail across it. Although the steel can be replaced (I believe a replacement costs as much as a whole new tool if you add $6 S&H), this type of tool should last for years, not literally less than 60 minutes of work. use before replacing steel/stone - Insufficient instructions for use. The short instructions that came with it basically said nothing more than "Turn the dial to set the edge angle. Run the Burr Doctor over the edge of the ski. I checked the DMT website for more detailed instructions and found that they have very good, clear and detailed instruction videos for what seems to be all of their diamond coated sharpening products, ie all of their products except for this tool. It should include instructions clearly stating in which direction the edge angle is applied, what is the utility or advantage of an angle other than 90 degrees at the edge of the ski or snowboard, as well as detailed general instructions on how to use the tool. CONCLUSION: If you need a small ski sharpener, I do not recommend this product. It is not particularly comfortable to use, hardly changes the ski edge and wears out quickly. Honestly the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is that I might have abused it considering it's called the Burr Doctor and not Ski Sharpener. If it were only used to deburr the edges of freshly sharpened skis after the first few rough filing passes, or if it were used to keep the edges of a pair of freshly sharpened skis sharp, it could do so intelligently. . However, the product description describes it as a "winter sports edge grinder" and with a "diamond in the rough to transform a dull edge", which I think could reasonably lead to the conclusion that it is a ski or snowboard sharpener. Unfortunately, this product is not suitable as a pocket tool for sharpening the blunt edges of skis/snowboards. I paid $18.22 for this tool from Revain (the price has since gone down as Revain prices fluctuate frequently) and I have no desire to give it up. more than the cost of a very good 12 pack beer so I plan to get in touch with DMT and see what they have to say about their product - they say their tools come with unlimited warranties or guarantees so I might be encountered a defective product which they will replace. I will come back and update this review once I see what DMT will do for me.
