Review on 🎨 Hydrus Fine Art Watercolor Set 1 Colors 6 - Dr. Ph. Martin's, 0.5 Fl Oz (Pack of 6) by Michelle Langley

Inconsistent quality control on set 1 (sets 2 and 3 have better quality control)

I ordered all 3 sets together and this caught my eye. Set 1 is not made at the same location as Set 2 and 3. Set 1 is made in California while set 2 and 3 are made in Colorado. I don't know if they recently moved their manufacturing facility to California, but I checked online and their official website says they are headquartered in California. They say the lack of quality control of the kit 1. I had to make an exchange because the first kit that came was awful. The first set that arrived had a small leak in one of the vials when the dropper broke the cap. Most bottles had curdled blobs of paint at the top of the bottle (about 1 inch deep around the inside of the bottleneck). I tried pushing the piece back into the bottles, mixing it with the ink and giving the bottle a really good shake. But as soon as I used them to draw, I could see small particles on my paper. Worse still, the particles then leach out more pigment, making the texture grainier. After seeing this problem, I opened each bottle from sets 2 and 3. Neither had this problem. You may be wondering if this is a used set. I'm pretty sure I received a brand new set and there is a disposable sticker on the packaging material. I did an exchange and the new set had none of these issues. So far I like the colors and light shades. This allows me to really expand the possibilities of watercolor and gouache. I have also used it as calligraphy ink. I'm still in the testing phase, but at the moment the ink is too thick for dip pens. The addition of water makes it slightly better, but still not the quality I was looking for. Another thing, if you buy this ink make sure you have a deep palette bowl. Shallow palettes can cause ink to flow into other palette cells.

Pros
  • Made in the USA
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
