Wow good so I decided to buy these for a friend who experiences the usual frustration of his duvet slipping into the bedspread. He tried to tie his ties, but somehow they came undone, or the threads snapped, or the elves kept cutting them. anyway, he just couldn't keep the ceiling in the ceiling. I've been using these pens for about 2.5 years now and I really like them. I've never had a problem with tearing, scratching or any other issue since I first used them. I've read some of the reviews and I think most of the issues described are due to user error and not contacts. Installation first - turn the duvet cover over and lay it upside down on the bed, facing towards the mattress. Reach into the case pocket, position the pins *UP* and insert them through the back so the small clear plastic "lining" is inside the pocket. When all the pins are sticking out of the duvet cover, *carefully* lay the duvet over the duvet cover and align it so that it is in the correct position. DO NOT TRY THIS! You will rip the blanket as it moves over the pins. Pick it up and move it carefully. Once installed, go over and "poke" the ceiling into the pin so it goes through the ceiling. When all the pins are accounted for, put the caps on the pins, turn the blanket over (easy since the blanket won't move now), and you're done. The hard white plastic caps are on the inside, the smooth plastic padding is at the bottom of the duvet (not noticeable or felt when there is a sheet between you and the duvet cover) and there are no skin tears, problems or issues. The key to removing the caps is ACT SLOW. You can't just pry the release key on the cover and rip it off again. Slowly lower it until it completely covers the cap, then gently (and slowly again) pull up to remove the plastic cap. If you go fast, the magnets won't attract the balls in the lid and remove it. So what's frustrating? I guess everything evens out for me when the ceiling changes. Turning the lid inside out, spending time sticking your hand all the way up to insert the pins, and aligning them after each time is a tedious process. Again, I want *NO* movement of the quilt, so I use 10 pins (three on top, 2 on the bottom of each side, three on the bottom). BUT - it's worth it if you don't want your ceiling to move. I change my bedspreads quarterly, then they are washed, dried, ironed and waited for the next use - so only four times a year is not bad. Highly recommended and worth it.
