I bought this because my dog keeps making a big mess around his harness. I assumed it was more of a hardened rubber, like a winter shoe mat. Instead, it's a very soft, pliable rubber, more like a very thin silicone spatula. With normal wear and tear (including your dog stepping on his lip) the lip loses its shape and becomes a flat mat. I give that a four. It has a dog pattern on the top and a bowl which is cute but you won't see it with food and water bowls. However, the rubber stays put on hard surfaces - it doesn't move at all, which is a plus on hardwood or tile.
