Strong magnet. There are no complaints other than that it can be too strong. I use an Otterbox protector (I attached a magnet to the back and used a very large magnet). , and an Otterbox tome (I put the magnet in the credit card slot and used the extra large option). It's frustrating that I have to keep the device pressed against the table regularly during the day if I pick up my phone moderately often. It's kind of become a permanent habit to do this at least 10 times a day or more. The surface isn't glass, which probably seals better, but it's a fairly smooth laminated wood platform, so I don't think my expectations are too high. A larger suction cup might have worked better. I think I would buy it again if needed but with the understanding that this is not a 5 star product. It's going to be almost perfect, but seeing my $1,200 phone fall off a few times (still attached to the stand) made me a little nervous that I wasn't holding the stand in place when I put mine on plugged in or unplugged the phone and regularly checked the stability.
