Review on Enhance Your USB Speed with the Sonnet Allegro Pro USB 3.2 Type A PCIe Card: Four SuperSpeed 10Gbps USB Connectors by Jeremy Gulledge

Not compatible with HP Z4 G4 Workstation

I installed this on my HP Z4 G4 Workstation with the latest Windows 10 Pro. Device manager recognized it correctly, but the card didn't respond with the standard Windows driver. Sonnet advised me to use updated ASMedia drivers. This caused my computer to crash almost immediately after installation. I've never had this problem with a USB adapter card and assumed the card was defective or incompatible. It turned out that the latter. I replaced the Sonnet with a StarTech adapter card that uses the same ASMedia 1142 chipset and got exactly the same results. StarTech Support reported receiving several similar messages from customers attempting to install their card on an HP Z4 G4 Workstation. Conclusion: It looks like the ASMedia chipset is not compatible with the Z4. There is a previous generation StarTech USB adapter that does not use the ASMedia chipset. The maximum speed is 5 Gbps, not 10 Gbps, but it has four independent lanes. So when four devices are connected, the speed is the same as this model. I will try to remember to report my results. UPDATE: The card mentioned above is also not compatible with HP Z workstations. Both ASMedia chipsets and Renesas (NEC) chipsets have problems. The chipset that works (confirmed) is manufactured by Texas Instruments. I could only find them on older adapter boards like the SIIG JU-P40212-S1 which are based on the USB 3.0 specification, not 3.1 or 3.2.
