I gave my old Zune to my dad a while ago as I switched to the Sansa Zip Clip+ years ago. He has vision problems, so the big screen helps him. However this is an older device, the battery died after 45m and I wanted to give it a little refreshment. So when changing the battery, I decided to replace the HDD with an SSD - mainly due to lighter weight, power consumption and access time, instead of increasing the storage size. As others have said, it works great the first time. What I did was carefully remove the small plastic bezel on the bottom of the Zune, remove the two tiny Phillips heads, carefully separate the two halves, remove the battery by unplugging the cable, remove the hard drive case through the four tiny Phillips heads. Screws, carefully fold *this*, starting at the end opposite the battery, carefully lift the HDD out of the cage, take the ZIF cable out of the HDD, plug it into the SSD, put the SSD back into the cage (with shock absorbers that fit a new drive), then I put the whole thing together. It took about 30m in total, moving at a very careful pace. After assembly I plugged the Zune back into the computer, I had to reinstall the firmware and then re-sync the Zune with the collection. This was a little tricky as the old Microsoft servers are no longer active, but there are guides online (search ZuneUpdate for more info). at 30% there is no weight saving. Ditching the cushion pads and hard drive case will likely save you another 10g, although it's probably not worth it. It's a little pricey, and there's a 64GB version for $30 less, but as far as I know, the KingSpec is one of the few drives that works reliably for a Zune upgrade. Converters like ZIF-SD don't seem to be reliable either. I'll leave an update if dad has any issues but for now I'm happy.
