This is my first impression of the device: I think the first thing to mention is how good the packaging is. Now for performance. I intend to use this device to run VMs as my internal drive (1TB SSD) has become too small. When I plugged in my laptop (USB-C 3.0) this morning, the first thing I did was migrate my VMs - 6 virtual machines and OS VMDK, 365GB. The average transfer rate was constantly >= 500 MB/s (see pictures) and lasted 10 minutes. The drive did get a little warm, but nothing to worry about (<100F). The drive's weight and casing is obviously a heatsink and is working properly. After the files were copied, I resumed the (2) VMs I was using before the move, confirmed that I moved the VMs, and everything works. Marvelous. The VMs actually seem to be more responsive than those on my internal hard drive, and even when they're not, I haven't noticed any loss in performance. I won't do any before/after testing, just "feel" and that's good. The only concern right now is performance over time. If I have something to report I'll update the review, other than that I'm very satisfied! - Updated 09/03/2020. After a few months of use, the drive started ejecting randomly, which is TERRIBLE when dealing with virtual machines, so I've already messed with most of them. Luckily I had backups but I was still losing work/wasting time/frustration. I contacted Sabrent support and got an apology from them, so thought I'd update the review and hopefully save someone else the same issues. One final thought: if you're just using the drive for backup/storage it should be a good choice, but if you plan on using the drive as an active service drive you should probably look elsewhere. Overall I am very disappointed as this ride was incredibly fast. Update 9/28/2020 After numerous emails to Sabrent support I was able to get the RNC and send my drive back for a replacement. Today I received a replacement plate. I have to assume this is a refurbished drive based on how the drive looks and the fact that it doesn't work - AT ALL - a fatal hardware failure. My computer won't restart even with the drive attached. Update 4/9/2021 (Final) I wanted to wait for the last update until I had a final review, so here it is: Sabrent replaced the faulty replacement they originally sent me and I've been using it since last October. It was very reliable and didn't have any of the issues I had with the original drive. It's going to be hot with lots of activity but that's to be expected. Overall I'm happy with this disc and may one day get another one. I have not received any compensation for this review. I just wanted to give one last update. Upgrade to four stars.
