Hope this helps someone. I started dosing Seachem Excel and Flourish into my aquarium. My plants always seemed stunted and occasionally had problems with GSA, diatoms etc. My main concern was the java fern, said to be resilient, but mine always lived well for a month and then started dying. I stopped dosing Flourish and Excel. and switched to 2-3 times weekly doses of potassium and phosphorus instead. Day and night! My stunted plants are budding like crazy, everything is super green and the java fern has finally stopped rotting. The algae stops spreading and actually dies off the leaves of plants that I've always read are doomed. I also got more diligent cleaning the Eheim canister and changing the Aqueon HoB filters. Lesson learned: keep the tank clean and add NPK instead of all that extra crap in Flourish and you'll feel a whole lot better. My bow tank is 36 gallons, CO2 free and with Finnex LED lighting.
