Does exactly what it is advertised to do. It only heats up when and where my dog is lying on it. I'm more comfortable with it plugged in all the time because it's not like a heater that can overheat and catch fire. The midfoot padding is quite soft, but feels more like wool than I would like. Perhaps that is why he does not transmit heat further than to the place where the dog is lying on him. Brown plastic fabric cushions but soft enough to hold my dog's head. I bought a medium which has enough room for my 20lb boston terrier. That would be enough for two Bostons hugging. The cord is thick and somewhat protected by a metal spring along its entire length, but you still have to be careful of a dog chewing on the cords. The cable is not very long. So far I've only used it indoors. In general I like it.
