When I first looked through this book, I noticed a few sock patterns that I really want to knit! Most knitting patterns based on Japanese patterns are unique and very different from the American/European patterns I often see. Each sock pattern is rated by difficulty and there is a wide variety which I appreciate. I also like the wide range of yarn counts used in it - it's not just fingering! Weight ranges from lace for nice but totally impractical fishnet socks to very chunky house slippers that look light and fast. If you're looking for a book of neat and fresh sock patterns, this is great! However, if you're expecting this to offer a glimpse into Japanese culture or even the history of knitting in it, you'll be disappointed. I would like the author to include background information such as Piecework magazine articles that tell us about the project and the culture that inspired it as they present methods and directions. However, I bought it for socks and Japanese. pattern, and it's fabulous for them! And I think I have some super bulky ones to go with these quick slippers.
