I'm admittedly a newbie to these ratchet attachments - they were easier to put on than take off. In clear fall weather, we towed two kayaks (14ft and 16ft) on the roof of a Honda Element for 1,000 miles of country roads. The system consisted of: trunk and mounts, universal saddles for transporting kayaks (see review there); Malone Auto Racks SpeedLine Mini Tie-Downs Ratchet Tie-Downs (see review); and this pack of FORTEM Ratchet Tie Downs, 4 x 15 feet. They glow in the dark, making it easy to check the tension after a long day of riding. It worked great! One helpful tip we were given prior to the trip was to rotate the straps so they don't (irritatingly!) sing in the wind while cruising down the road. There are different types of belts and lengths in this set and we have used most of them but not all of the longest lengths. Having to order them before picking up the kayaks and not sure what we would need (didn't want to be left at a remote pickup location without the items needed) the setup described here was a great relief and everything we needed was required . We've added two cable locks for security during week-long trips and overnight stays in unfamiliar places. Throughout the trip we stayed on back roads to slow down (add miles) but at times we exceeded 70mph and all gear stayed safe.
