I'm a bit new to Japanese whetstones. However, I currently have a variety of whetstones. Diamond stones work well with less grit: they are very aggressive and sharpen quickly. However, they leave small marks on the blade. There will be no Chosera 3000. It quickly removes metal and leaves a nice, smooth edge. Shapton GlassStone ranges from low to high grit, but I've only used 16,000 (I buy these from SharpeningSupplies.com as they work well with their products. Ceramic stones polish well at higher grit (5000 or higher). They are also great for aggressive sharpening Naniwa Chosera 3000 removes material well from the blade I really enjoy using it it's fast and efficient I found it to be less aggressive than diamond or glass stones Also realize that sharpening is individual and subjective, it's a matter of preference, not which type of stone is "better" or "worse" than the other. It's a large stone, so the user should carry it a lot. Just chop and go. No soaking. One Warning I was using Diamond Stone to smooth the edges of my Chosera and I accidentally caught a corner of the Chosera and broke off a piece of the stone. The edges needed to be smoothed first ted when I touched her metal handle oh at my assisted-opening pocket knife. This is not a problem for most knives as they do not have this handle. Maybe I was a bit inattentive. However, the jewel still works perfectly. Just a warning. I like this stone very much. This is among my favorites.
