Cheap metal lids that do the job.
Bought to cut into speaker covers for a project. My Dremel with a cut-off wheel did the trick, and surprisingly it took longer than I thought to cut. Surprisingly, I was also able to easily indent the metal with my thumbs. That's exactly what I wanted. I would argue that at this price point you couldn't get any real metal speaker covers cheaper, at least one that can't be cut with scissors. Now the assembly issues that everyone else mentions weren't a problem for me because I've been using them. so take that into account too.
