Silver is used as an active ingredient in this product to protect against germs. Other reviewers are concerned about the product's "pesticide" label, and the EPA considers silver a pesticide. I looked up the EPA registration number for this product (clearly listed on the box) 82260-1 to find the details. Silver is an element with antimicrobial properties, but it's not a chemical that gets into the water any more than wearing a silver ring and washing your hands. Our humidifiers have worked well every night for the past 5 months after dropping a pod in the water tank. About once a month we clean the humidifier with vinegar, in between it stays nice and clean with this product.
