Review on Sony RDRGX7 RDR GX7 DVD Recorder by Mario Anderson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great but with some caveats

I've only had this unit for two weeks and conventional DVD recorders have a frustrating tendency to fall apart after a month or so so What I say must be taken with a grain of salt. So far, so good. This unit delivers excellent picture quality and is noticeably more tolerant of different brands of discs than some of the other recorders I've owned. Far fewer "hard drive errors" or "disc not read" messages than my Philips or my Go-Video. Although this device bridges the format gap by writing to both DVD+RW discs (not +R) and DVD-R/RW discs, it does not offer the full functionality of a DVD+RW writer. In particular, you can't create chapter thumbnails, nor have I been able to add them to a disc first burned on this unit using the +RW recorder (perhaps this could be done using a computer). Also, the rich editing capabilities of this unit do not apply in +RW mode. So it's not really a "double" car. One more note: the one-touch rewrite feature that works over a FireWire connection doesn't work if the rewritable tape wasn't originally digital. So it won't work if you're using a Digital 8 camcorder that outputs a digitized signal from old analog tape. But these pictures can be taken in the "normal" way. In general I am very satisfied so far. Tip: Before you pay the Amazon price, check the "used and new" sellers.
