Review on Efficient Pocket-Hole Plug Cutter by Kreg: Creating Perfectly Concealed Joints by Kyle Smithlin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Well designed but unable to provide sharp end caps throughout.

This is an extremely well made product and you can tell a lot of care has gone into its design. The square plastic tube it comes in is also a nice touch with a cup inside to hold the bit and keep it from rattling. The best thing about it is the ease of use. I have to say that you must have a Kreg with a vacuum nozzle, which keeps debris to a minimum and helps keep the drill bit cool. I've found that a drop of machine oil on the shank stops the tool squeaking in the inner sleeve and seems to help drill smoother. One thing I've found is that despite a good design, it's still difficult to get a clean connector. If you buy a box of these they are all beautiful, have clean edges and fit very nicely in a pocket opening. I have tried different materials and varied drilling speeds and have found that it is still extremely difficult to get a sharp, clean plug without chipping. Corks are invariably not well defined and require more filler to have a smooth surface. It is also difficult to carve end caps from the piece of wood used. If you don't plan on painting the finished product, consider purchasing end caps for a more aesthetic finish. For me, the main reason I like this tool is that I have a backup in case I need some extra plugins. Having said that, I have to say that in the end it's easier to just buy boxes of plugs and leave this cutter for emergencies. I've found that the best material for least tearing is kiln dried 2x4s, which you can buy at HD or Lowes. Drill along the fibers and you can get 5 on each side. Be careful when cutting the end caps as they may fly out! I honestly can't give this product 5 stars as it doesn't offer the same quality as the plugs you bought.
