I have a 1-year-old kitten who has always scratched very well at his scratching post. I brought her one and put it on the floor and scratched it a bit with my nails to show her - she immediately ran over and scratched excitedly. It can slip on hard floors, so it is recommended to put it on a carpet or hold it with furniture. She quickly thought of standing on him and scratching herself.
