Update: It's been 6 years since I bought them. i still love her They're still strong, the skin is soft and supple, and most importantly, they're still doing their job perfectly. Because they are made of leather, they are easy to clean and do not smell. For what I wanted they are really perfect. I will be buying another one because one of my dogs needs a larger size so I'm glad they still offer them! I got my first Basset Hound in 1991 and I've been looking for a suitable collar ever since. I finally found it! I have two bassets so I bought two of these and have been using them for three weeks which isn't all that long but they don't wear out and will soften and supple over time like leather should. . There was a small problem with one of the collars. The D-ring was a bit small to allow skin to snag rather than tighten and release smoothly. I used a dremel to thin the leather a bit where it goes through the D-ring and that completely solved the problem. I have two leather leashes that I bought in 1991 and still use today, they are just passed from dog to dog. I expect to still be using the same two leather martingale collars 20 years from now. Basset Hounds have a lot of loose skin around their necks, which does two things when wearing a collar: they can slip off the collar very easily, and when the collar is tightened, all the skin around the neck tightens. I'm not a fan of nylon collars, they get dirty and smelly within a few weeks of putting them on a dog, skin looks good for years and doesn't pick up an odor. So until now I've used a leather collar with a loose buckle and then put a nylon martingale on it when we went out and we go every day. It was far from an ideal solution. Changing the collar is a constant chore, and when I have to grab a dog's collar outside of a walk, I often end up with an empty collar in my hands. I've looked at leather martingale collars before, but never liked that the part of the collar that tightens it is a chain on most of them. In my opinion they are not suitable for everyday use as the chain links can easily snag on objects and potentially choke your dog if he panics. The risk with a martingale is not as great as with a choke collar, but it is still there. This collar is everything I was looking for, it's leather, well made and beautiful. The martingale's action is based on the skin rather than the chain, making it less likely to be caught. If you are considering this collar, you should be aware that it does not completely eliminate this risk. A D-ring can still snag and trap your dog, but the skin won't pucker and tighten like a chain, and a single D-ring has far less chance of snagging than multiple rings on a chain . It tightens when I need it and loosens when I don't need it. This really is the perfect collar for my needs.
