We recently moved to Southern California and have two homes that adjoin our terraced backyard on the north side. Everyone has an annoying barking dog. It had to be that we couldn't even open the windows because one dog barked all day and the other most of the evening. Most of the time I have no idea what they're barking at. But they definitely barked at us when we were in the yard OR when we went upstairs and someone could see us through our upstairs window. We had to close the blinds to keep it from exploding. It's gotten fun. I don't know how the previous owners of this house endured it. So I could be obnoxious and call the animal welfare agency - our county animal welfare agency allows you to file an anonymous complaint and give them a time frame when a "snooty barker" is usually annoying. They come out and when they see an unpleasant bark, they refer to the owner. I didn't want to go directly to the carotid artery, so I looked for something like Petronic. I researched many of them before settling on this one. It was one of the less expensive options and many of the reviews said it worked, although overall reviews for this type of product are mostly below 4 stars and most reviews seem to suggest that its effectiveness is just coincidental. I didn't have much hope when I went in, but figured it would be a 'real' place to start. I set it up, tested it and immediately put it on the second level. The next annoying dog was right there when I hung it up. He stopped barking immediately, tried a few more times, then turned and ran away. WOW this thing works! The dog in the other yard is further away from the device and still works, but not as often as I've noticed. He barks during the day so I'm not so determined to get him/her to stop but I COULD buy a second block to hang near this dog's fence. BUT THERE'S ALWAYS THE CATCH! Although our evenings are now delightfully quiet, one of my two dogs now hates going out. He'll leave with some persuasion, he'll cool off and take a nap, but as soon as he realizes someone's home, he'll stand at the door and try to enter. a little more nervous these days. Our other dog doesn't seem to notice his presence - we've always wondered if she might have a hearing loss, this might explain why it only affects one of our dogs. So definitely a disadvantage. ALSO there is a VERY bright LED indicator that flashes green every five seconds to let you know the device is on and battery life is good. One night I was walking past my top floor window and saw a bright flash of light coming from where this thing was hanging and it looked like a blinking green strobe light in my neighbor's yard. I don't really think they ever went outside (everyone is dusty, their garden is poorly maintained and we never hear them), but I still don't want it flashing through their back windows like an idiot. So what's a girl supposed to do? I'll lower the level to one and see if we can get the same results without putting my dog to the test. I will also put a piece of black tape over the LED bulb. I can't see how the battery life is, but I can't annoy my neighbor. If only they would treat us the same way! In any case, if my dog is still under stress level one or the neighbor's dog is not so calm, then I call the animal welfare service. I wanted this to be the solution, but I can't stress my animals about it.
