Synology Diskstation thoughtfully tells you when the fan is not working. It's better to know that the fan is dying before you cook the discs. This is where Synology's monitoring was very helpful, allowing me to choose the balance between noise and warmth. I don't normally go through the packaging, but in this case even the box (and the excessive amount of plastic - an environmental sigh) tells you this isn't a one-size-fits-all product. The wide range of mounting hardware and electrical adapters makes this a solid five star product for me.
