I find it ridiculous that sock sizes are based on age and not shoe size. But I can clarify one sock size: The sock size for children from 8-12 years corresponds to youth shoe size 4 (4Y). I'm a grown woman with small feet and wear casual shoes (mostly sneakers) in women's size 5-5/2 and youth size 4Y. But when it comes to socks I always wear kids socks because adult socks are sooo big for me. I bought socks for 8-12 year olds and they fit me perfectly with just a little more room in the toes and heels. The socks are not particularly thick and only reach the ankle. The inside of the fleece is soft, but when I turned the socks inside out, some pieces of the fleece came loose. I plan to wash the socks in a small bag on a gentle cycle and then air dry them to keep the fleece from coming loose. Also, my feet seem a bit sweaty in socks, but I attribute that to the fleece lining, not the wool. In the future I will try to update my review on how the socks hold up.
