They're made of memory foam, but not too soft. I cut the foam at the back end just long enough to hide my back behind the pillow. Third, I bought Oodles of Noodles 1.5" x 18" Hard Core Styrofoam Sticks - 6 packs. (I swear they were made for chair covers.) They came in a pack of 6, enough to make both sides and backs. All materials for this project were on Revain. I spent about $90 total and saved myself hundreds of dollars by not buying new chairs that my dogs will eventually throw out. Today I am definitely a satisfied customer!
