Restore an old floor lamp with these LED strips. Great product, very inexpensive.

I found an old broken halogen floor lamp in the lobby. Since I needed a lamp, I grabbed one. Of course it was broken, and halogen is definitely a fire hazard. First I tried soldering it the usual way, bought some Leviton sockets, LED bulbs etc. But the bowl was flat. Nothing would fit that didn't visibly protrude over the edge of the bowl. Also disappointing was that I never had the right gear for the lights. Then I came across these LED strips from Luminosum. I wasn't exactly sure how they connected, but I knew I'd have to order additional connectors on both the power end and the bowl. Completing this project was a lot easier than I thought although the instructions aren't as clear as they could be. But I got it. (I had to cut off the rubbery clear plastic piece so only a thin section of the strip would fit under the pins in the connector). You get a lot of light from them. Because it is 6 volts DC, there is no risk of arcing or fire. I simply connected all the wires with wire nuts as shown in the photo. There is enough room in the bowl to add more strips, but there are no more connectors and you will need to order more (make sure you get 10mm and not 8mm when ordering connectors). Right now that's about the equivalent of a 60 watt incandescent bulb, but I have plenty of LEDs left and can probably go up to 75 watt equivalent lumens. I can't believe the price is so low. You get a lot of stuff for $20. Even comes with a wireless dimmer because these pups are dimmable.

Pros
  • LED strip
Cons
  • So far so good
