Cleans dirty/rusty threads like new

I've only used this a couple of times so far but looks like a good shop tool. I had to replace the rear struts on a 10 year old car. The top bracket had a couple of bolts welded into the wheel well and were quite rusty. The replacement bracket came with new nuts, but they were too tight to thread onto the rusty studs. Because of this arrangement, it would be almost impossible to press the bolts, but these taps are perfect. I loaded it with a small amount of Tap Magic and hand tightened it. From there I turned it a full turn with a wrench, then backed it off a quarter turn and repeated. Lots of rust and dirt scraped off. After chasing both bolts, I hit them with some brake cleaner to remove the coolant and the nuts could then be screwed all the way on by hand. It probably wouldn't be a problem to just install new nuts. Unscrew the cleats, but due to the difficulty of replacing the cleats if I broke them, it was much safer to clean them first. I also used a file to clean up some of the large threads on the axle. They're not perfect, but better than they were. There is definitely a technique for this and I plan to practice more.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
