Review on Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens - Optimized for Canon EOS SLR Cameras by Ha Joon ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I was surprised by the quality for this price.

Actually, I bought this glass because of the focal length. The picture quality is quite satisfactory. With "straight" hands, you can perfectly shoot in poor lighting conditions and even at night. Before buying the CANON EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS II USM, I thought about selling it, but then I realized that they rather complement each other. Sometimes I shoot two at the same time, while 70-300 is on the crop (equivalent focal length 112-480mm), and 70-200 is on the FF, respectively - I cover a very large range of focal lengths. In principle, the glass is good for its money, but requires very careful handling.

Pros
  • The price for such focal lengths is very interesting. Pretty sharp glass, the stabilizer is fundamentally not much inferior to 70-200L 2.8 IS II. Very light compared to the same 70-200L 2.8 IS II. The presence of a latch trunk. Focal lengths are working on the entire range.
Cons
  • Most of all, I don’t like the rotating and retractable front lens when focusing: it’s almost impossible to shoot with a polarizer. The trunk extends under its own weight, if the latch is not latched. The design itself creates a feeling of fragility, especially in comparison with the L series. A potential vacuum cleaner, so I use it very carefully. No hood included.
