Works well as a standalone portable speaker for what it's designed for. There is practically no distortion when playing at maximum volume and even when changing the equalizer settings. There were times I was hoping for more volume, but on those few occasions it was mostly the track itself rather than the speaker. That said, the XTRA BASS feature is more of a gimmick, although don't expect too much from something the size of a hairspray can. one in the bathroom and one in the living room (I live in a 1 bedroom apartment) so it seemed perfect. However, I quickly found that this feature, while very useful and efficient, sometimes caused grouping/maintaining connection issues. This function is also based exclusively on the rather boring and unappealing Sony Music Center app. . If you want it permanently paired with another Sony speaker as a DIY multi-room system; I would look elsewhere.
