You can charge 2 AA in the middle or 4 AA by filling. But you can only charge 2 AAA in the middle, you can't charge 4 AAA at the same time. It says you shouldn't mix batteries, so I guess that means you can't charge 2 AA and 2 AAA at the same time. When charging 4 AA, it is difficult to remove the first battery. To pull it out, you need to pull and push at the top with a fingernail or knife. You should have left over at least one battery to help you remove the first battery. My old charger had a hole from the back to the battery pack to push out a battery or two after charging. I was disappointed that it couldn't charge 4 AAAs at once like my old charger did.
