Review on Dual Coarse Flattening Stone for Angerstone by Eduardo Locke

Leveling Stone Fails

It comes in a nice box, tightly packed in foam. However, there were no instructions on how to use this stone. Upon inspection, the stone with my square appeared flat, although it did have a slight chip around the edge. One of the long edges had a slightly raised rim, something like a ridge. At first this stone seemed very sandy and abrasive. After soaking the stone in water for 30 minutes as recommended in a previous review and using it on my Norton stone for a few minutes, I found that it worked. Then after a few more minutes the sound and the effort changed and you could tell it wasn't working properly, even with constant re-wetting. I looked at the stone and you could see and feel that it was glazed and no longer felt abrasive. I tried cleaning the stone with an abrasive cleaner but to no avail so I used a diamond plate to clean it. The next day after the stone was dry I used mineral oil and it seemed to work better but after 45 minutes my Norton stone was still in bowl shape and it wasn't too bad to start with. I even turned it over and used the flat side and it worked for a few minutes and it's glazed too. The end result after over 2 hours of effort was a stone that was still hollow despite being better than it was. I will buy a new Norton Stone next time. It's not worth the time or effort, nor is it worth having a perfectly flat whetstone. Oh yes, once you've removed the glaze from the leveling stone, it no longer feels abrasive. I would return it for a refund but I have already used it. Don't waste your time and money on this, it's not worth it.
