We have four dogs and I just can't stand a house that smells like animals (and yes, our dogs are clean. :-) Vacuum bags can get pretty smelly. You are no exception if you do not follow the manufacturer's recommendations and change them monthly (though not completely). But they last a month with little odor unlike some other vacuum bags we've tried. And we have less dust in the house than when we moved in 10 months ago, between vacuum bags and regular air filter changes. I don't like the smell of those carpet powders you buy at the grocery store, so I sprinkle some ground cloves, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice on the floor and vacuum it up. During the cleaning, the whole house smells nice.
