I bought this for a pre filter before a new water heater. 100% stainless steel construction to withstand the humidity and Florida sun. Plastic simply cannot withstand ultraviolet radiation in the long term. I also use it with a dual function scale + filter cartridge. After a few months I see that it leaches fine iron from the water, so it's working. The problem is that the o-ring/gasket that comes with the filter does not seal well, resulting in drips slowly escaping even after the surfaces and gasket have been cleaned and lubricated with silicone grease. In terms of flow design, I hate seeing 90 degree changes in flow direction. Even a small 90 degree radius is better than a sharp turn, resulting in more turbulent flow and lower pressure/flow. They could have easily molded the filter top with this design/shape, but no, they machined it to have a nice tight right angle twist. Oh well. A minor design note for me (due to outdoor installation, which 3M frankly doesn't recommend) is that the retaining ring, when fully installed, leaves a lip around the perimeter of the top, allowing a small amount of water (and eventually dirt) accumulate at the top. A better design would be if the ring didn't protrude above the threads at the top, allowing water and debris to drain. Ring: If the fittings are not tightened so that the flat surface of the hex is perpendicular to the length (i.e., with an apex of the hex face facing down), the ring may not be fully seated as it rests against the edge of the fitting. I only noticed this after installing the really expensive stainless steel and CPVC fittings ($5 each). See image. Therefore I may choose to grind a portion of the face of each fitting to allow the snap ring to fully seat. It doesn't have to be fully seated to create a watertight seal, however, as the O-ring doesn't depend on the bottom flange to fit onto the top one; only the bottom slides up and over the o-ring. Despite this, the fuselage still appears to be leaking. So I have to think this is an undersized o-ring. I'll have to update this review after sanding the fittings to see if that helps with the leak. I expect better from 3M but this is as good as I could find.
