Let's say you have a work PC and a gaming PC and you want to use the same computing accessories with both systems at the same time. how would you do it Sure, you can get a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard that can be paired and switched between different platforms, but what about speakers or a monitor? I've encountered such scenarios several times over the years and a port switch has always been the best solution. After reconfiguring some of my setups last month and merging two setups on the same table, I've found what is probably the best displayport switcher I've ever come across. This is a CKLau 2-port KVM switch that does basically everything you want in a switch without breaking the bank. At the time of purchase, this switch was only $69.99 and was one of the few on Revain to have audio and mic support. That means you can connect speakers and use them for both computers. This was key for me as I wanted to use the JBL reference speakers with both the Mac Mini and the Cyberpower computer. All your accessories connect to the front of the switcher. The dual-port model I have has two USB-A ports for the keyboard and mouse, as well as microphone and speaker slots. From the back of the device comes all the chaos. I say "chaos" because it seems a little intimidating at first, but once you understand the purpose of each section, it basically sorts itself out. Divided into three sections, the KVM switch features a 5V DC power jack, an on/off switch and a slot for an optional wired remote control. The DP out connector connects this switch to the monitor that both computers use for display. CKLau supplies all the cables needed to connect the system, including these USB connectors, which plug into the specific computer. Once connected to their computers, the KVM switch will be recognized as an optional accessory. This is how the mouse and keyboard are connected to any computer. The same applies to DisplayPort connectors. When communicating between the KVM and respective computers via DisplayPort, the switcher can upscale the resolution on companion monitors to 4K at 60Hz. I don't actually have a 4K monitor setup and I don't use this switch with a monitor. Next I will explain why. As I said in the introduction, my main goal in purchasing the KVM was to be able to share a speaker system between two computers. You will be surprised how difficult it is to make something like this even for a person with decent technical knowledge. I have used several USB switches in the past and they have always only provided USB ports and HDMI ports to work with. The reason I don't use KVM with one monitor is because I want to display two monitors at the same time. I often have a video or audio timeline that I edit on my Mac Mini. When rendering or exporting while idle, I wanted to keep my attention on my gaming PC without losing sight of my work. If I only used one monitor, KVM would switch between the two computers and never display both at the same time. This particular switch also does not have monitor daisy chaining capability. While KVM does a surprisingly amazing job of doing what it was designed to do. Press the select button on the front panel and the switch will instantly do its job. The green-orange light shows which computer you're currently connected to. Unfortunately, it has a common problem that all USB switches have. Because all of those mechanical cables are so close together, static buildup causes a buzzing noise from the speakers. I've seen this happen on my other switches and it's usually caused by RGB keyboards. When RGB is off, the buzz goes away. I haven't found a better solution for this than disabling RGB. Another amazing thing about KVM is the build quality of this Chinese made product. It's a metal body that feels solid and doesn't get in the way. Unlike many cheap plastic switches, I have no doubt the KVM will last a while. I'm very happy with the speed KVM runs at and aside from the static hum this is exactly what I was hoping for. Very rarely does something work exactly the way you want it to. This is one of those products and well worth the money I paid for it.
