Review on Enhance Your Raspberry Pi with Kuman's 7" Capacitive Touchscreen Display by Jeff Baker

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great little screen at a good price. Just a few questions

Bought this touchscreen as a display for my Raspberry Pi 4. Assembly was a bit tricky, but I figured out the layers and spacers and assembled the frame. I noticed that one of the plastic layers was actually making contact with some electronics on the board and was being pressed against the other layers of the frame. For this issue, the suspect plane had a cutout, but in the wrong place (perhaps for a different model?). I made a new cutout on the plane to avoid the electronics on the board and everything came together nicely. I first set it up to be powered from the USB port on the Pi (make sure to use the top power connector on the display labeled Touch). The system started immediately with no problems. I've moved the display power from the Pi to a dedicated USB power plug because sometimes the Pi doesn't recognize the screen on boot. I've read that you may need an external power supply to keep the display on during boot. I saw on the front page of the Revain listing that it says 5V 1A and my power supply was 1.2A so I figured it would be fine. The screen didn't work properly at boot, but calibration was disabled. I touched a spot and the cursor moved a little higher and to the left or right of where I touched it. After many pranks, the screen started not connecting to the IP (not supported). I sent a message to Koeman and he immediately sent me patches for the display configuration file. I finally got the screen back but without touch controls. A few more rounds with Koeman and it still doesn't work. In desperation I tried to change something and switched the screen power back to the PI. Then the screen was connected and the touch control continued. Bottom line, with a 1.2A power supply, the screen will turn on and connect, but there are no touch controls. For amps with a higher PI USB port, everything works. One of the VERY positive things about this whole experience is that Koeman was always quick to respond to my emails and provided great help. Customer service is excellent. I think if the bezel layer cutting issue and clear information on the power requirements for the screen were fixed it would be 5 stars across the board. Still a good deal.

Pros
  • Everything seems to be
Cons
  • Low refresh rate: When the monitor refresh rate is too low, motion may appear blurry or slow.
