Initialization may take 5 hours/terabytes - UPDATED

UPDATE: It seems my drive is about to initialize and I've clicked on it but nothing has happened and there are no signs of anything happening. After waiting more than 50 hours I checked Disk Utility and it still shows the disk as uninitialized. I clicked Delete and that gave me a bunch of quick formatting options. Since it was an external and not an SSD, I formatted it to macOS Extended (case sensitive, journaling). It worked and I quickly got to work with my new movie repository. This was all due to my own misunderstanding, but I'm not sure where to find more details to understand what the "Initialize" button is for. A window appears saying that the drive needs to be initialized. You click on "Initialize". button and nothing happens except the window disappears. When you open Disk Utility, the drive in question still says it's not initialized. It doesn't seem clear what is supposed to happen. Disk Utility has an active Ambulance button which I clicked and it told me the drive was fine. Then I clicked delete I think. Why should I press "erase" when the drive is not initialized and there is nothing on it. It seems counterintuitive to some extent is now formatted and filled with backups of my HD movies.------------------------------ -------- --------------------- I didn't realize this drive was unformatted as most drives seem to die, die I bought were somehow formatted. Anyway, when I put the drive in an Insignia external USB enclosure and plugged it into my iMac, a window popped up saying it needed to be "initialized". I wasn't sure what that meant, but apparently it was a deep disk format, not a normal quick format. This more advanced formatting process, called "Initialize" on my Mac, is actually a complex formatting process that checks all hard drive sectors for bad sectors and the like. Apparently this could take 5 hours for each TB on the drive according to the tech on the Revain chat. 50 hours in total. It's been 36 hours for me and the hard drive is still not recognized and says "not initialized" in DiskUtility. This worried me that something was wrong. I will wait another 14 hours or more to see if the process is complete. When trying to look up information about "initialization" there was mostly a lot of vague references to it, and there didn't seem to be much solid information about the process or how long it took. Resellers or Revain would do well to provide more information about the initialization or formatting process and how long it will take on these seemingly unformatted drives. Initializing a 20TB drive can take 100 hours (more than 4 days).
