Another great sounding product from Monoprice.

Until recently I've been using the Monoprice 8323 headphones, which many online users know are fantastic value for money. When I saw that Monoprice had new headphones that looked very similar to the AKG-style headphones, I thought I had to try them. I'm sure I'm glad I did. At first it seemed to me that the sound was a little different, but I couldn't understand what exactly I find different about it. The bass frequency seems to be at a different level than the 8323. It doesn't sound as punchy but sounds smooth to me. The bass seems to swing longer at low frequencies, while on the 8323 it starts low but flattens out quickly. After listening to these new ones for a while, I found that I preferred the bass response of the new modern retros. The highs sound great and feel more accurate than the 8323. I immediately noticed much better spatial awareness while playing. The highs can be a little bright at times and may require a small EQ adjustment to bring it down. As for the cons, I have to say that for the price it seems silly that the much cheaper 8323s have a detachable headphone cable and don't have them. As you can see from the pictures I solved this problem by adding my bushing. A little Dremel work, soldering, the smallest socket I could find, and a little patience paid off. The supplied cable is too long for my taste, and it's also constantly kinked and ugly. The ear pads are also of poor quality, but that seems to be quite normal for cheap headphones in this price range. I'm pretty sure any replacement AKG-style earpads will do.

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
