My son's 4Runner had a weak motor. I tried cleaning and re-lubricating the old block and that helped a bit. He could turn on the front axle, but not turn it off. Gave it a chance and it solved the problem. If you're patient, there's a trick to replacing this, by simply standing it on the ramps, lowering the skid plates, and draining the oil from the diff. I also want to make sure the shift forks line up with the snap ring. My son did it first and it was too easy. I had to take pictures again to fix it. There are a few other issues in the transfer case that need to be addressed in order for 4WD to work perfectly. Skip the old "go out and lock" type jacks and all the manual intervention. New things are great when they work, but the real problem is when they break.
