I purchased the DMT Extra-Coarse in April 2011, now in January 2012. The plate was purchased specifically for mounting on billet aluminum and was used as my profiling plate on the EdgePro Apex and used for leveling scales and freehand work when needed. In all of these functions it has performed as well as I could wish for, and even in a few odd areas that I hadn't thought of when I made my original purchase. Of course, it has proven to be excellent for sharpening knives. This is a VERY aggressive plate that will strip metal fairly quickly. For adjusting the original bevel or repairing edge damage, this option or the XXC option is a good choice. Under running water, it also serves very well as a water stone disc to prevent excessive accumulation of stone mud. About three weeks ago it was used here for a very different purpose when I was building a hull for a model ship. . I cut the glass myself and was alarmed by the many very sharp edges on the panels. In a burst of genius (or madness, anyway) I pulled out the DMT plate and used it as a sanding block with a very light touch to break up the sharp edges on the glass. The diamond cut the sharp edge without protest and ensured the panels were safe to handle without the risk of slipping easily causing me to bleed all over my project. Side effects aside, I've used this insert on about 50 knives with no loss of performance. As a previous reviewer pointed out, DMT inserts (like ALL diamond inserts) have a short break-in period. The first three or four times you use the record you will notice a distinct feeling that the record is quickly becoming less aggressive. What is the truth! However, this is part of the plate design and will be calculated. When diamonds are applied to a steel substrate, some of them will adhere more firmly than others. During the first few uses, the loosely attached particles will come loose and the sheet will "break" leaving only firmly attached particles. It will then stay at the same grit indefinitely, except for abuse or excessive pressure on the plate. Positive pressure blows particles off ANY diamond plate, but it really needs to be leaned on. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this cymbal and hope it will serve me for many years to come!
