I don't know if I'm a complete idiot, but the instructions that came with that particular item don't list that item. I was VERY close to giving up and just getting it back. The bracket that came with it doesn't fit and the instructions didn't help. I shouldn't have. (I mean the cross brace.) I spent an hour trying to figure it out. I gave up and installed it without brackets. holds up well. I don't know if the mount I received was the wrong size or something, but it DEFINITELY doesn't fit the product. general. I installed the base on the wall and then installed everything else. I used other screws I had that didn't come with the kit. You may or may not encounter the same problem; provided that the things they gave you actually fit together. at this price i can't complain. this is a beautiful lamp. it's a bit big in my opinion, but I kept it anyway as I've already worked through this issue.
