I had to run a 140m Ethernet cable between two switches. The Ethernet standard says 100 meters is the limit. So all you have to do is put another switch somewhere in the middle so that each length doesn't exceed 100 meters and you're all set. You can't just use the FF RJ45 adapter, it's passive and no different than a single 140m cable. The middle device must actively receive the data and then retransmit (repeat) it, just like a switch does. But what if there is no current at the midpoint? This is where POE powered power strips come into play. The first switch must be a POE switch (or use a POE injector). The expander is the middle switch that receives power + data and sends data to the last switch (repeats). We don't need a 12V power supply for anything. just right? Unfortunately, this device does not meet my requirements. When I connect an extender to a POE switch I get the POE power LED but not the link LED. Only after connecting the data output cable to the last switch do I get the link LED. This tells me that the data is only being transmitted passively and not actively being repeated, so it's still a 140m pass for the data. This switch shows the link indicator even if only one Ethernet cable is connected.
