Review on 🚴 Enhanced Safety with Garmin Varia RTL510 Bike/Cycling Radar Tail Light Bundle: Real-time Alerts for Vehicles Approaching from the Rear by Rich Rickenbaugh

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best safety gear (and most expensive) I've ever bought.

Very pleasantly surprised by this thing. I have a long drive ahead of me, 2 hours one way across the Pacific Northwest and I drive year round which means it rains most days in the winter. Despite staying on the trail 60% of the way home, I am forced onto the road at several points. My mirrors are fine, but when it really rains they're almost useless. This little radar tells me exactly where the traffic behind me is, how many cars, their relative speeds, and it's always right. I can't tell you how reassuring it is to look over your shoulder and not be surprised by a car flying by because I already know it's there. There's also an alarm that goes off when a new car pulls into the replica, and even an old fart like me can hear it over the noise of the road. The receiver unit is highly visible and small enough to fit anywhere, even in a busy booth (as you can see in the picture). The radar doubles as a bright tail light, which is actually as bright as my other specialty lights. Both use a half-twist mount, so attaching and detaching is easy and took less than a minute to install. I wish it didn't cost that damn much but after using this little radar I don't drive without it anymore. In the dark PNW winter it makes commuting safer, even in the pouring rain when I can't see anything in my water-soaked mirrors.

Pros
  • The taillight offers daylight visibility up to a mile away and is visible up to 220 degrees so drivers can see you long before radar sees the car.
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
