Judged by a dog trainer. In general, let the dog be a dog and bark until it becomes obnoxious. My dogs barking has improved. Basically you start with the lowest setting and increase it if it doesn't seem to have any effect. I have 4 dogs and we live in a corner house next to a mailbox so my dogs think they have to guard the yard. As much as I love other dogs, no one wants to hear you bark, especially at 6am!
