The PXA-130SA saved me days of work migrating from CentOS 6 KVM to CentOS 7 KVM. Previously, Orico drive racks (non-RAID) were connected via USB 3.0 Super Speed and streamed to a virtualized NAS via a PCIe address. CentOS 7 KVM went over USB devices but not over JBOD (LVM + RAID) ports. Plain disks worked, but not JBOD storage pool disks. The SuperMicro X11SAE-F BIOS recognized the drives, listed the drive models, made the drives available for the Hot Swap/Persistent BIOS menu and for the Boot Disk menu. I now have 16 fully BIOS integrated AHCI + NCQ SATA III drives running through my virtual NAS. Both CentOS-6-KVM and CentOS-7-KVM now have 17 fully functional RAID arrays. Supermicro typically has about two dozen SPICE virtual desktops (a simple protocol for independent computing environments - think RDP on steroids) and half a dozen workload servers. Thank you Ablecom for making this device available at a reasonable price and no I am not a seller. After 2 months of work I haven't had a single JBOD (RAID + LVM) resync. Almost triple the bandwidth is a nice bonus. To kick things off, I'm migrating my "backup-nas" VM to use a second eSATA PEX-SA130 adapter. I believe 10 drives for a 2-port port is the actual limit since it lists drives "1" through "A". I have 4 drives per drive tower and 4 towers. --- After 2 days in my production environment, I'm amazed at the increase in vNAS throughput. At least 4x faster than SuperSpeed USB 3.0 configuration. I haven't checked the USB configuration, so this is purely subjective. The reason could be that JBOD RAID-1 has two LVMs (storage pools in M$) on different PCIe lanes or AHCI command improvements or both. anyway OMG and WOW. --- After 2 months of work I haven't had a JBOD resync, which used to happen about every two weeks. I'm buying another PEX-SA130 to migrate another pair of external USB drives to eSATA used by my "backup NAS" VM. This will equip my system with 24 AHCI drive bays. I never thought I could use so much memory; but then again, I never thought I would ever need 64GB of storage.
