I got a new Christmas kitten for my daughter. It's just a little thing, so it doesn't take much. I was thinking of a smaller tree but our existing cat is quite large and heavy - she is a big broad cat! I assembled it a few days after Christmas and was amazed at how durable it was. Both the little kitty and the BIG kitty play this thing and it doesn't swing much. I am very impressed. The only "problem" is that some of the friction fibers will come loose, but that's to be expected. My relatives have 2 cats and a tree they paid $150 for and it's not as strong as this one. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!
