Review on APC Protection SurgeArrest Performance P11VNT3 by Ricky Bedell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I own this product, but per DOE guidelines, this product should be the last line of defense. Make sure your entire home is surge protected.

I own this product, but US Department of Energy policy recommends that this product be the last line of defense. Many people think that a surge protector prevents electronics from burning out due to a nearby or direct lightning strike. 3 km of atmosphere did not protect from a lightning strike, and do you think that a couple of millimeters will protect diodes?! NO! What protects against these shocks is the grounding of the house. For this reason, it's important to use a whole-house surge protector that plugs into your breakout box. At best, this is a straight copper wire less than 6 inches running from the junction box to the surge protector. .why?! well, we humans are lazy, but it's our nature as nature is lazy. ie electricity seeks the least resistance/shortest path to earth. If you deliver that output through the whole house surge protector, it will all power can be grounded without touching your electronics. Internal surge suppressors like this one are good for residual EMP caused by a strike or internal surges in the house, for example: AC turns on, washing machine turns on, heater turns on, etc. They are not designed to handle high voltage surges absorbing energy are designed to protect against small transients. So my advice to all of you is: 1) MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD SOLID GROUND 2) Get a whole house surge protector (only costs $30, D-square makes a great one 3) Use the surge protector Stage 3 like this for all electronics 4) For sensitive electronics buy an integrated UPS (always on UPS). 5) Protect your coax and phone lines from surges. him to the ground. Make sure there is at least 20 feet of coaxial cable between the jammer and sensitive equipment. I would just plug it right in where the coax enters my house.

Pros
  • Power strips and surge protectors
Cons
  • Some bugs
