The light is really cool and the speaker is really loud. That's all you really need for an alarm. but a little more thought could really make it a lot better. 1) What annoys me the most is that you can't set it to a permanent 12 hour mode, every time you turn it on it reverts to 24 hour military time. 2) The instructions are wrong in a few places, most obviously when setting up your own alarm sound, the instructions say you need to name the alarm file, when in fact you are creating a FOLDER called "ALARM CLOCK" and storing your MP3 file or other sound file (only tries MP3) in the folder. Elsewhere, the instructions say "short press" when it's actually a press and hold (e.g. when setting the time). 3) It may seem obvious to some, but it took us a few tries, when setting the alarm the last step is to toggle it from OFF to ON, otherwise it won't work. This is another UI annoyance, the "SET" mode is very short. So if you don't do anything for a few seconds, it will exit "SET” mode. Again, for $30, it's pretty good. It would be 5* if it wasn't for the terrible instructions and user interface.
