A city parking hazard, my 2000 Jetta's side mirror was brutally cut off by an unwary driver. An estimate of $300 to have this repaired at a body shop prompted me to look up Revain alternatives and their accompanying video tutorials. I decided to bet on myself and do the DIY installation of this side mirror for less than a quarter of the price after the cost of the tools. I have NO auto repair experience and was able to fit it in just over two hours, mainly because I was careful with the fragile plastic parts of my 16 year old car. The mirror required a bit of maneuvering to fit the weather-coated flesh around the window, but I'm happy to report that the electronic controls are fully functional in all directions, as is the heating function so far. CONS: Blue glass in this replacement. the part distorts the reflection a little more than my original - so much so that I notice it every time I drive and look from one mirror to the other; I think I would question the reflection even if I didn't have a rider to compare it to. Also, the clamp on the replacement broke when maneuvering on the spot, even with my careful installation. Luckily this piece stayed intact on my broken mirror so I didn't have to panic about where to find another one. ADVANTAGES: The mirror shape and fitment is almost perfect compared to the original one as it is not an OEM part. . My Jetta is factory painted gloss black and I have received comments that the look of this matte (primed) replacement mirror matches my paint color better than one that matches mine! I feel good about leaving it as is until I decide how to paint it (professionally or do it yourself). Overall I am very happy with the money I saved by doing it myself and buying this mirror. This is a great replacement for a factory part and has worked great even when installed by a true amateur. With those savings I would most likely justify a professional paint job. Tips for other newbies: - Make sure you don't over tighten the screws and check the functionality of your window before reinstalling the door frame; Over tightening made my window sluggish and would eventually wear out the motor. - Leave the foam that comes with this replacement mirror. I tried reusing the thicker foam barrier from the broken mirror, but this made the gap between the replacement mirror too big and I was afraid water would seep in. Tools needed: socket wrenches, Torx T20 bits. and T45 - I purchased the IIT 65920 Security Tamper Proof 6 Point Star Bit Set Torx Socketproof T45 - Phillips head screwdriver
